IETF considers new Cisco-proposed Internet routing technique
A proposal from Cisco engineers is spawning a new IETF working group to explore scalability issues associated with multihoming, colleague Carolyn Duffy Marsan reports. The Cisco proposal, called Locator/Identifer Separation Protocol (LISP), describes a method for reducing the number of entries in the BGP routing tables of core routers when enterprises split traffic among multiple carriers.

Bi-annual IOS patch fest fixes 11 flaws Cisco released eight security updates in its latest IOS patch, which the company issues twice a year. The eight updates fix 11 security vulnerabilities, most of which could disable or disrupt service on a router. Cisco has also been working with other companies on a remedy for the "Sockstress" bug in TCP/IP. This can be exploited for low-bandwidth DoS attacks. Cisco's next set of IOS patches is due Sept. 23.
